Back in 2011, the vast majority of all sentiment analysis offerings were based on machine learning or statistical approaches that tried to derive the sentiment from documents by using positive or negative keywords or phrasings. This NLP method is also known as "bag-of words". However, due to the complexity of natural languages this approach had its limitations. We decided to start with the next level of sentiment analysis based on qualified statements and applying a reasoning chain with semantic rules to derive the correct sentiment.

Going live in 2013 newsboard.io was the first fully automated financial news analysis software that searched for the sentiment of financial concepts across multiple languages. As each statement about a company or country was evaluated separately, a detailed profile and history with positive and negative sentiment could be obtained for every company or country.
